HOUSE MADE SIMPLE SYRUP
Drinkwithlong making simple syrup. Simple Syrup is easy to make. I use a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water. That means if I use 5 oz of sugar then I’ll use 5 oz of water. Make sure the water is filtered or bottled to avoid any mineral notes in your cocktails from the water in the simple syrup. A 2:1 ratio is fine if you prefer a sweeter simple syrup. Here, I used Extra Fine Granulated Sugar. Demerara sugar can be substituted for the granulated sugar. Simple Syrup made with demerara sugar is known as rich simple syrup. Demerara sugar is a large, unrefined sugar grain with a distinct golden color. The flavors are far richer then granulated sugar. I tend to use Demerara sugar simple syrup in cocktails with heavy/aged spirits and simple syrup with granulated sugar for cocktails with white/light spirits. The instructions are pretty basic:
- Heat water to boil on medium heat (med heat will prevent sugar from burning)
- Add sugar to boiling water
- Stir until sugar is fully melted/dissolved
- Remove from heat & allow to cool down
- Bottle and refrigerate
Keeps for 4 days refrigerated. Vodka can be added as a preservative to lengthen the longevity of the simple syrup. I tend to put about 3/4 oz for every 16 oz of simple syrup.
